Abstract
A transducer arrangement is provided for measuring distances representing relative displacements between apparatus parts, particularly pistons and cylinders of hydraulic rams. A plug 30 may screw fit into a hydraulic ram cylinder end and houses an electromagnetic distance transducer 58 having a short range of operation with opposing applied biases from relatively strong and weak springs 40 and 52, respectively, between it and a part 54 which may be pinned to the interior of an axial bore through a piston and its rod assembly. The relatively weak spring 52 is constrained in a tubular sleeve 22 also to extend within a piston/piston rod bore. In operation, relatively large displacements of an apparatus part keyed to the part 54 will produce nearly proportionate smaller displacements of a transducer core 56 enabling the transducer 58 effectively to measure such large displacements accurately. <IMAGE>
