Abstract

A process for the production of a gamma -chlorocarboxylic acid ester corresponding to the general formula <IMAGE> in which R, R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5, which may be the same or different, each represent a linear or branched alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and, except for R, may also represent a hydrogen atom, from the corresponding, optionally substituted, butyrolactone comprises dissolving the optionally substituted butyrolactone in at least an equimolar quantity of an absolute alcohol containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and reacting it with at least an equimolar quantity of thionyl chloride, after which the SO2 formed is separated. The yield of the ester may amount to 90% or more. The esters are valuable intermediate products, particularly for the production of cyclopropane carboxylic acids and their esters.
