Abstract

197,659. Schneider et Cie. May 13, 1922, [Convention date]. Field carriages.-Relates to carriages of the type in which the rotation of a cranked-axle, for the purpose of adjusting the firing height, is performed simultaneously with the elevation of the gun for range. According to the invention, the actuation of the elevating-gear allows a spring- accumulator to rotate the cranked-axle, the same accumulator acting to counterbalance the weight of the gun about its trunnions, and also as an elastic suspension for the gun carriage during transport. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cranked-axle A has feathered thereon a sleeve C having teeth C' engaging racks F' on spring- pressed tubes F which slide in cylinders E. The range elevating-gear J, j<3>, j<4>, which actuates an arc H<2> on the gun cradle H, is geared by wheels j<7>, j<8> to a screw K<2> engaging a nut L<1> on one of the tubes F. By operating a, hand-wheel m, the screw can be locked against end movement by a fork M which is inserted in a groove K<3> in the screw. The actuation of the elevating-gear therefore, allows the springs to expand and rotate the axle, a pinion G, capable of being clutched at I to the sleeve C, acting on an arc H<1> to counterbalance the weight of the gun about its trunnions. When travelling, the pinion G is declutched from the sleeve C and the screw K<2> is released by operating hand-wheel m, the accumulator then acting to relieve road shocks. In a modification, Fig. 7, a single elevating-arc H<1> is employed, the elevating- worm j<3> driving a wheel 0 keyed to the crankedaxle and connected with the accumulator F by a counter-shaft N which carries the sleeve C and the elevating-pinion G. When travelling, the operation of a screw r serves simultaneously to raise the worm j<3> and declutch the pinion G. In a further modification, each spring casing E is pivoted between the gun cradle and an arc which rocks on the gun trunnions and is geared to the cranked-axle.
