Abstract

196,335. Green, G. Dec. 24, 1921. Submarine vessels; hydroplane vessels; ships adapted to run on land.-A system of framing applicable to the body parts of submarines, hydroplanes, aircraft and motor road vehicles comprises longerons 1 extending substantially the whole length of the vessel and converging together and substantially meeting at bow and stern where they are united by spiders 2, 6. The longerons are bowed apart at their centre to a distance which is a substantial fraction of the width of the hull and a series of hoop frames 2 are secured at intervals along the longerons. An outer series of hoop frames 9 to which the skin 16 is attached are arranged concentric with the 'inner hoops and are supported by pivoted twopart tension spokes 14 the ends of which engage in keyhole slots in the hoops. In the case of small boats the skin may be made in two half shells joined upon a rubbing strake. The engine 21 which is carried upon transverse frame members carrying also hydroplanes 28, is set at an inclination with the propeller shaft 23 which has a bearing carried by a stern post upon which the longitudinal frame members converge. In some forms an air screw is arranged at the forward end and pivotally supported disc rear wheels connected with the steering wheel serve as a rudder as well as steering on land in the case of a land and water vehicle and the front wheels are drawn up against the action of springs when the vehicle enters the water.
