Abstract

Gravity, materials descending by.-Relates to a process of and apparatus for drying materials to be ground in revolving drums, such as ball and tube mills, and consists in heating either the coarser portion of the material or the grinding bodies before placing them in the drums. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus for carrying out the invention in which the material is placed in a revolving sieve 4 so that the finer portion of the material falls into the shaft 3 and the coarser portion into the shaft 7 which may be integral with the shaft 3. The shaft 7 communicates with a fire-grate 11, the gases of which pass through the shaft to the chimney 13. The fire and the heated coarse material are carried by a conveyer 8 to the grinding - drum 1, the vapours from which escape through a flue 14. In a modification, the grinding bodies 2, Fig. 2, pass out of the drum and are heated before being returned with the material. The new material and the grinding bodies passing out of the drum are carried by the conveyer 25 to a sieve 26 from which they pass into the shafts 3 and 7 respectively. The grinding bodies are heated in the shaft 7 and fall with the material on to a rotating plate 27 and thence into the drum 1. The drum is formed with a partition 16 to which the outlet device 15 is secured. The material and the bodies pass through the outlet device on to a cylindrical sieve 18 which rotates with the drum. The material passes into the annular space 19 and is discharged from the drum by the shovels 20 attached to the end of the drum. The grinding bodies pass through the tube 23 into the shoot 24 from which they are carried by the conveyer 25 to the sieve.
