Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO STITCHED SEAMS (71) We, MATHBIRK LIMITED, a British Company of Mansfield Road, Sutton-in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention is for improvements in or relating to stitched seams and has for one object to provide an improved seam for the joining together of two or more pieces of material. The invention has particular application to the joining together of textile material but the invention is not limited to the materials which are to be joined together being a textile.Conveniently the invention is particularly suitable for the joining together of knitted textile materials, such as for example, in the joining together of sleeves of knitted materials for the formation of pullovers, jumpers, cardigans and such like, and for the attaching of collars to such garments or ribbed hems and such like.
It will be appreciated that such garments, particularly of knitted material, may be formed either by fashioning the material during the knitting thereof, that is to say by introducing additional stitches or taking out stitches in order to shape the garment, or alternatively such garments may be made by knitting the material in the piece and then cutting the material to desired shapes and joining the edges of the pieces together.
It will be appreciated that where the knitted materials are cut to desired shape and the edges joined together, that the edges which are joined are "rough" edges, that is to say, they are rugged, non-uniform and are not a selvege. In the joining together of such edges, difficulties may well arise in ensuring that all the threads forming the material are in fact adequately joined to the next adjacent piece of material. For example, it will be appreciated that if one of the loops of the "rough" edge of knitted material is not caught by a thread joining it to the other piece, then the possibility arises that that particular thread may run back or unravel.
Hence, it has been the practice in the past to ensure the adequate joining together of the "rough" edges of knitted textile materials one to the other, to provide for the running on of the individual loops of the knitted material onto the points of a linking machine and then to ensure that each of those threads is joined or linked together conveniently by a single chain stitch.
There is described in our British Patent Nos. 1 531/2/3 details of a simple chain stitch linking machine, which is an improvement on hitherto known linking machines at the time of said patents. There is described in the specifications of the aforesaid patents, the provision of a single chain stitch seam for joining together two or more pieces of fabric.
The present invention however, has for its object a provision of a multi stitch seam which ensures that all the threads and loops of a "rough" knitted fabric are adequately joined together and thus no possibility of unravelling or unwinding the fabric can occur.
The present invention provides a stitched seam joining two or more pieces of material together adjacent the edges thereof, comprising at least one first row of chain stitches disposed near the joined edges of the materials and at least one further series of chain stitches having loops extending over the joined edges, said further chain stitches extending through the joined materials at a position which is further from the joined edges than that at which the said first chain stitches extend through said materials so that the loops of the further chain stitch series overlie the loops of the first mentioned chain stitch row and the joined edges.
Conveniently the present invention provides for at least four series of chain loops which may be formed by a chain stitch linking machine conveniently one which will have a needle with a hook and a latch for closing the hook, so that as the needle extends through the fabrics from one side to the other, yarn is fed to the hook and as the needle is withdrawn through the

Claims (1)

  1. at least four series of chain stitches, two of which are of the kind similar to said first chain stitch row and two of which are of the kind similar to said further chain link series.
    5. A seam according to Claims 3 or 4 in which the said further series of chain loops have half the number of chain loops extending through the materials as the first two rows of chain loops.
    6. A seam joining two or more materials together adjacent edges thereof, comprising four series of chain stitches the first one of which is located adjacent the joined edges, the second one dipslaced further away from the said edge so that the first and second chain stitches are disposed in rows adjacent the edge one spaced from the other in which the third and fourth series of chain stitches extend into the materials further from said edges, said third and fourth chain stitches extending through the fabric and over the joined edges so that the chain stitches have portions of yarn extending over the joined edges and over the yarn forming the first and second chain stitches and in which the fourth chain stitches extend over the third chain stitches.
    7. A seam substantially as described and illustrated herein with reference to the ac companying drawings.
    8. A method of joining two or more pieces of material together adjacent the edges thereof which comprises locating the materials to be joined on radial extending points of a linking machine, said machine having at least two linking needles, the first one of which reciprocates relative to the material to form a single row of chain stitches joining the materials together and the second one of which reciprocates relative to the materials to form a series of chain stitches with loops extending over the edges to be joined and over the yarn forming the first mentioned chain stitches.
    9. The methtod according to Claim 8, having at least two pairs of needles, the first pair forming respective rows of chain stitches the first one of said rows of chain stitches being closer to the edges to be joined than the other one, and the second pair of needles forming respective series of chain stitches having loops which extend over the edges of the materials to be joined and also over the yarn forming the two first mentioned rows of chain link stitches.
    10. The method of joining two or more pieces of material together by chain stitches substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
