1522303 Backing pile fabrics SIDLAW INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 July 1975 [25 July 1974] 32811/74 Divided out of 1336707 Heading Dl [Also in Division B5] In a method of coating carpeting with a plastics material comprising spreading a predetermined thickness of thermoplastic material e.g. polyvinyl chloride over an area of heat-resistant carrier sheet, laying the carpeting to be coated onto said layer, thermally treating the material and the carpeting thereon to bond the material to the carpeting and removing the coated carpeting from the carrier sheet, the thermoplastic material comprises a primary layer substantially equal in thickness to the predtermined thickness extending over the area and a secondary layer which is applied to the carrier sheet in patches of predetermined dimensions substantially less than the area and prior to the application of the primary layer, the thickness of the patches being less than the thickness of the primary layer and the secondary layer being substantially immiscible with the primary layer when the primary layer is applied. An apparatus comprises a heat-resistant carrier sheet 14, doctor means 2 for spreading the primary layer, means for laying the carpeting, a hot plate 4 for bonding the carpeting to the layer, a doctor blade 6 for stripping the coated carpeting from the sheet, and, upstream of doctor means 4, a printing roller 13 in association with lick roller 12 mounted to gather the material for the patches from reservoir 10.
