Abstract

1521108 Sensing pressure in a fiber layer MASCHINENFABRIK RIETER AG 17 Oct 1975 [1 Nov 1974 30 Sept 1975] 42661/75 Headings D1F and DIN In a fiber handling machine a cover plate 7 is located over a fiber layer 14 on a moving surface 5, e.g. a carding cylinder, and pressure variations are measured under the plate 7. Such pressure variations are proportional to the thickness of the fiber layer and are used to control the speed of suitable elements of the machine, e.g. the feeding arrangement, carding cylinder, doffer or drawing device, and hence even out variations in fiber layer thickness. A swelling out on the plate 7 provides a throttling effect with a pressure increase at A and decrease at B, the difference can be used as the measured valve. This valve is compared with a preset desired valve and retroactive control is applied. Pressure sensing bores 9, 21 may be located across the width of the fiber layer, or a single bore can communicate with a transverse groove in the cover plate 7.
