T FUKUOKA 15 Oct 1974 [2 Nov 1973 18 Jan 1974 4 May 1974] 13848/77 Heading A3B A method of making footwear comprises moulding a sole and at least a part of an upper including a side vamp portion integrally in separate steps, and then securing an upper vamp to the upper. The sole may be moulded from vinyl chloride, polyurethane or synthetic rubber, &c. as a first moulding and the part including a side portion moulded from vinyl chloride, polyurethane or synthetic rubber as a second moulding. In one form an insert sheet of fabric leather, &c. 42, Fig. 1, is let into the side of an upper 38. The insert sheet 42 may be air permeable. A cushion may be provided inside the shoe. The upper side vamp and sole may be integrally moulded and consist of a foamed layer sandwiched between unfoamed inner and outer skins, Fig. 3 (not shown). The upper 1 and the upper vamp, &c. may be stitched together by use of a plastics strip 54, Fig. 4, which as shown may have slots to receive the edges 55, 59 of the plug 56 and upper 1, or may be stepped, &c. for this purpose, Figs. 5-7 (not shown). In another form, a sole 200, Figs. 9, 10 is moulded of hard vinyl chloride, polyurethane or thermoplastic synthetic rubber as a first moulding in a mould cavity, and within ten seconds a section 1 including side vamp parts is moulded of hard vinyl chloride, polyurethane or synthetic rubber. An upper vamp 56 of leather, fibre, synthetic material may be mounted in the mould before the section 1, &c. is moulded, and fused thereto during the moulding. Openings like the holes 200 may be provided in the upper vamp 56 to allow flow of moulding material and facillitate connection between the parts. Similarly, an intermediate section 221 is mounted in the mould. Cushioning studs 232 are provided in the heel. Such a shoe may be moulded from three or more different materials. An elastic strap (210), Fig. 13 (not shown), may stretch across the top edge of the upper vamp portion, and the edges of the foot opening be bound by tape (222). The shoe may be lined by placing lining material within the mould.
