Abstract

1487512 Wrapping articles in stretch film INPAC AUTOMATION Ltd 19 Jan 1976 [24 Jan 1975] 3211/75 Heading B8C In a method of stretch wrapping an article, or assemblage of articles, 22 the article, or assemblage is positioned stationarily, the leading edge of a web of stretch film on an upright roll 9 is secured to the article, or assemblage, and an automotive vehicle 5, carrying the roll is moved around the article or assemblage, whilst the web is maintained under tension, to wrap the article, or assemblage, in film drawn from the roll. As shown the roll 9 is removably mounted by spigots 6, 7 in a frame 1 which carries adjustable clamping jaws 2, 2 releasably attached to a vertical slide 3 on the mast 4 of a fork-lift truck 5 and a pair of nip rollers 10, 11 which are preferably rubber-faced and made of steel respectively, the roller 10 being manually rotatable by a hand wheel 12. A flexible brake band 15, anchored at one end to the frame 1 and at the other end to a pivoted, brake-applying lever 16 loaded by a spring 18, passes round brake drums 13, 14 which are mounted respectively on the upper ends of the shafts of the rollers 10, 11. A film-guide roller 21 is mounted at each side of the frame 1. In use an operator, by manipulating the handle 12, feeds the leading end of the film web through the nip between the rollers 10, 11, around the appropriate roller 21, and then attaches it to the article to be banded such as a palleted load of cartons 22. The friction brake 13-15 is released by operating a rod 19 and the truck 5 is then driven completely around the load 22 to overlap, and trap, the leading end of the web film whereupon the brake is applied and the truck is driven around the load to apply as many layers of stretched film covering as required. The web film is finally cut and taped, or heat-sealed in position. Helical wrapping can be achieved by synchronizing vertical movements of the slide 3 with the pay out of the web film as banding proceeds. The wrapping attachment may be incorporated as a permanent feature of an automotive vehicle.
