Abstract
1484613 Detecting extraneous matter on windscreens G KARL 28 Oct 1974 [29 Oct 1973] 46577/74 Heading G1A A windscreen soiling sensor comprises a light source 1 emitting light through prism 9 and windscreen 21 so that it suffers total internal reflection from dirtiable surface 2, when it is clean, and, in the same housing, photometer 7 sensing changes, due to windscreen soiling, of the light transmitted back through prism 11. The light is passed through focusing system 8 and reflected from mirror 10 and again focused by system 12, on to photometer 7, with iris 6, supplying a signal circuit which may, if the change exceeds a limit, switch on a windscreen cleaner. Bonding 15 has the same refractive index as the adjacent components.
