Abstract

1473316 Laminates W R GRACE & CO 23 July 1974 [25 April 1973] 19511/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division E1] A laminated structure comprises a support in the form of a sheet sandwiched between a membrane of water-proofing pressure-sensitive adhesive and a layer of sand course asphalt comprising sand which has been mixed with hot asphalt or bitumen. A bituminous felt may be provided on the face of the layer of sand course asphalt remote from the support. The support which may be substantially impermeable to water may be a copper or aluminium foil, a bituminous felt, a woven or non-woven fabric of synthetic organic fibres, glass, hessian or cotton or a film of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, polyethylene terephalate, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloridevinylidene chloride copolymer, polychloroprene or butyl rubber which may also contain bitumen and pitch. The pressure sensitive adhesive which may contain a central reinforcing material may comprise bitumen blended with natural or synthetic rubber in the ratio by weight of from 80 : 20 to 95 : 5, polychloroprene, butyl rubber, oil-based mastics or resins. A water proof seal may be provided on a concrete bridge deck by laying the structure on to the concrete with its adhesive side downwards and then covering it with asphalt.
