Abstract

1470379 Welding by pressure; jointing by tube expanding INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 18 Nov 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 39074/73 Headings B3J and B3R In explosively joining tubular members the parts of the members to be joined are placed one within the other and an explosive charge is detonated to force the parts into engagement while supporting the parts with an annular support formed by a coil of strip material. Two metal pipes 10, 11, in an embodiment are abutted and arranged with circumferential clearance in a jointing sleeve 12 and within the pipes is disposed an assembly comprising a metal sheath 13, and plugs 14 15, an explosive charge 16 and a detonator 17. A flat metal, e.g. steel strip 20 is coiled around and the sleeve 12 with its inner end attached to the sleeve and its outer end attached to a housing 22, the attachments being by welding, clamping or mechanical engagement of a tongue in a recess. Frictional engagement of the inner end to the sleeve may be employed. The housing 22 is rotated to tighten the turns of the strip around the sleeve and then the housing is locked by, e.g. a hand brake. Detonation of the charge welds the pipes to the sleeve. In a modification the explosive charge in several sections is arranged around the outside of the sleeve and the coil strip is arranged inside the pipes. The inner end of the strip is welded to a rotatable mandrel inside the pipes and the outer end is in frictional engagement with the pipe bores. By rotation of the mandrel the coil is tightened to press outwards against the pipes. The charge is detonated by a disc carrying explosive material connected to a detonator. Instead of explosive welding, explosive expansion may be effected and the sleeve may be omitted, one pipe being located inside the other of larger diameter bore or the belled end of the other. Rotation of the mandrel or housing may be by hand or motor, and a jointing sleeve may be arranged internally.
