1468190 Structural joints D W EKERT and P A EKERT 26 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 51226/74 Heading F2M [Also in Division E1] Building elements, e.g. wall plates, studs or noggings are of sheet metal rolled to a channel section the web of which has a pair of shallow grooves 14, 15, transverse slots 16, 17 being cut in the bases of the grooves and/or lugs 19, 20 being formed on one or both ends of each element, whereby the elements may be secured together at right angles by passing a pair of lugs on one element through a pair of slots in another element and bending the lugs over in the grooves, the depth of the grooves being sufficient to accommodate the thickness of the lugs when bent over. Fig. 1 shows two elements 10, 11, the former having a number of pairs of slots 16, 17 at selected positions along its length and the latter having in addition to the lugs 19, 20 a reduced width end portion 18 to fit between the flanges of element 10. Fig. 3 shows a stud formed by three elements 30, 31, 32 held together at their upper ends by a connecting piece 35 which is flanged and has lugs 36 and slots 37 to correspond respectively with pairs of slots in two top plates 33, 34 and lugs on the ends of the elements 30, 31, 32. The elements 30-32 may additionally be secured together by an internal horizontal plate having three pairs of lugs (Fig. 5, not shown) which fits in the rectangular space between the elements and is secured to the latter by the lugs passing through slots in the webs of the elements and bending them over. A further connecting piece (Fig. 7, not shown) is a channel-section member of slightly greater width than that of the elements, for connecting two elements end to end by passing punchedout tabs on the connecting piece through slots in the webs of the elements and bending them over.
