Abstract

1465961 Mixing gases GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 10 May 1974 [15 Aug 1973] 20855/ 74 Heading B1C [Also in Division F4] Mixing of a gaseous radioisotope released by crushing a glass ampoule in a chamber 14 with a gaseous diluent from container 33 prior to supplying the mixture to apparatus for manufacturing gas capsules (see Div. F4), comprises the following steps: a) Evacuating lines 12, 21 by pump 30 with valves 15, 19, 22, 28 open; b) closing valves 15, 19, 22, 28 and then crushing the ampoule in chamber 14 to release the radioisotope; c) opening valves 32, 22 to admit diluent from container 33 as far as closed valve 19, such supply being terminated when a desired pressure measured by gauge 20 is reached; d) opening and closing valve 19 to admit diluent to chamber 14 before opening valve 15 and screwing down piston 17 to expel the radioisotope and diluent to mixing container 11, the valve 15 being then closed; e) repeating step (d) until the required amount of diluent is present in the mixing zone between container 11 and valve 19; and f) opening valve 15 whilst valve 19 is closed and reciprocating piston 13 to cause mixing of the radioisotope and diluent by scouring the mixture back and forth between chamber 14 and vessel 11. Instead of crushing an ampoule, the radioisotope may be supplied to chamber 14 from a storage container (Fig. 2, not shown).
