Abstract

1461244 Treating metal with trivalent Cr solution LUBRIZOL CORP 12 May 1975 [17 June 1974 6 Sept 1974 3 March 1975] 19890/75 Heading C7U A ferrous surface (which may be galvanized) having no conversion coating thereon is treated with an aqueous solution of a trivalent Cr compound wherein the trivalent Cr ion is substantially the only iron present capable of forming a conversion coating on the surface, the solution containing no polymeric material, urea nitrate, or sulphonic acid. The solution may contain a salt such as Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 3 or Cr(NO 3 ) 3 or may be prepared by reduction of a hexavalent Cr solution using methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, HCHO, hydroquinone, an alkali metal iodide, sulphite or bisulphite, Fe<SP>++</SP> or SO 2 ; an acid such as HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 or acetic may subsequently be added and the pH adjusted to 3À5-6 with NaOH, KOH or NH 4 OH. The Cr content may be 0À01-0À2 wt per cent; the solution may contain a non-ionic surfactant. Typically a body is chemically cleaned, rinsed, treated with Cr solution at 0-50‹C, rinsed, dried, and given a 0À1-10 mil organic coating, e.g. of paint, varnish or enamel.
