Abstract

1452548 Pitch DOMTAR Ltd 21 May 1974 [22 May 1973] 22566/74 Heading C5E A pitch is produced from a heavy oil fraction having at least 90% of its constituents boiling above 300‹ C., of a coal tar distillate by heat treatment at between 400‹ and 470‹ C. under pressure, the pitch having a content insoluble in dimethyl formamide of 10 to 30%, insoluble in quinoline not greater than 2%. Upon coking the coke has a preferred orientation ratio greater than 80. The pitch is produced by distilling a coal tar material under atmospheric or subatmospheric pressure to produce a pitch and distillate oil, separating the heavy creosote oil fraction from the distillate oil and subjecting the creosote oil fraction to the heat treatment. The heat treatment is carried out at between 15 and 500 p.s.i.g. pressure for between 1 and 24 hours, in a closed vessel under autogenous pressure or the heavy creosote oil fraction may be passed continuously through a heating zone under pressure and the desired pitch continuously withdrawn.
