Abstract

1447086 Electrorefining heavy metals DEEPSEA VENTURES Inc 21 Nov 1973 [27 Nov 1972] 53984/73 Heading C7B The heavy metals Ni, Co, Mn, Sn, Fe, Zn or alloys thereof e.g. of Ni and Co are refined or electro won by electro-depositing a hard, dense and smooth deposit of the heavy metal at the cathode, e.g. of treated stainless steel starter sheet, while simultaneously evolving halogen at the anode from an aqueous solution containing the heavy metal halide and an alkali or alkaline earth metal halide, e.g. chloride, iodide or bromide of Na, K, Cs, Li, Mg, Ba, Ca, Sr or Rb. The solution preferably contains 0.3 to 2 atom/l of the heavy metal, at least 3.6 g atom/l of total halide, and has a pH of 1 to 3.5. The cathodic current density is preferably 10 to 50 A.S.F. The anode may be insoluble, e.g. of graphite, Pb or Sb-Pb, Pt or Pt coated Ti, or Ru coated Ti. The solution may be recirculated through a cell containing alternating anodes and cathodes.
