Abstract
1434726 Driving screw fasteners STANDARD PRESSED STEEL CO 30 April 1973 [9 May 1972] 21480/72 Heading B3N [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for driving screwed fasteners comprises output means 2 for rotating a screw 1, driven input means 8, deflectable coupling means 11 for transmitting power from input to output, a first displacement encoder 9 producing pulses (# 1 ) corresponding to rotation of the input means 8, a second displacement encoder 6 producing pulses (# 2 ) corresponding to rotation of the output means 2 and comparator circuitry (Fig. 4) for determining the difference between the number of # 1 and # 2 pulses during a predetermined number of # 2 pulses, and means for stopping the drive or maintaining a constant torque when the difference has dropped to half its maximum value. The measured value is the gradient of the torque-angle curve dM/d# 2 and equals K(## 1 -## 2 )/(## 2 ). Pulses 91 are fed to an up input of counter 25 and pulses # 2 to a down input of counter 25 after a direction check at 28. This prevents measurement if encoder 6 is rotating backwards under the influence of driven member 1. Pulses # 2 also enable gate 29 which passes the content of counter 25 (0 or 1) to gradient register 26, to shift register 27 and to count down counter 25. Shift register 27 is clocked by pulses # 2 , its capacity the predetermined number of # 2 pulses and its output is fed to the gradient register 26. The value in gradient register 26 is the continuously updated torque gradient.
