1431719 Cigarettes; filter sections TABAK ENG GmbH TECHNISCHE ENTWICKLUNGEN 2 Nov 1973 [3 Nov 1972] 50920/73 Heading A2C A cigarette cigar or cigarillo with a cylinder of tobacco divided into a smoking section and a filter section by a glow-extinguishing zone is characterised by having a plurality of capsules distributed in said glow-extinguishing zone, each of said capsules which may be microcapsules having a liquid-tight casing and containing an extinguishing liquid, said casings being arranged to release the liquid content in response to a predetermined increase in temperature caused by the burning of the tobacco and said liquid, when released, serving to extinguish the cigarette, cigar or cigarillo. The extinguishing liquid is preferably water and constituents improving the taste of the smoke, e.g. ethyl alcohol or essential oils may be added thereto. The casing of each capsule may be of cellulose, a cellulose derivative, or a synthetic resin, e.g. a polyolefin. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a cigarette consists of a wrapping 2 of cigarette paper and a cylinder 4 enclosed thereby and consisting of tobacco. A large number of capsules 8 are distributed in the cylinder in a glow-extinguishing zone 6 over the entire cross-section of the cylinder of tobacco. The filter section 12 is marked by a paper tip 14. In another embodiment the capsules are distributed in the cylinder in the glow-extinguishing zone only to a certain depth. The tobacco of the filter section may be of a lower quality than that of the smoking section. The capsules may be introduced into or on to the tobacco by blowing, spraying, or spreading them on or by dripping a suspension of microcapsules onto the cylinder of tobacco.
