Abstract
1429428 Battery case seals ESB Inc 19 Aug 1974 36451/74 Heading H1B An electric battery comprises positive electrodes 20, negative electrodes 30 and electrolyte containing layers 42 separating the electrodes, and a peripheral multi-layer seal surrounding the electrodes and the electrolyte containing layer and including metal strata 60, 70 and plastics strata 80, 90 and further including between the layers a hot melt adhesive layer 100 comprising a polyamide, the adhesive having a viscosity of from 1 to 100 poise at 350 F. The seal is completed as shown with layers 50 of conductive cell separator material extending beyond the electrodes and made by heat sealing. In a method of making a battery the edges of a square of carrier material are impregnated with the adhesive and the centre portion thereof is impregnated with electrolyte, the carrier material being placed between two electrodes and a pair of liquid impervious layers 60, 80; 70, 90 comprising a stratum of a metal and a stratum of plastics are placed around the cell and heat sealing these layers and the adhesive impregnated material.
