Abstract

1427957 Sharpening drills JAMES NEILL HOLDINGS Ltd 9 July 1974 [23 June 1973] 29930/73 Heading B3D A device for use in re-sharpening fluted tools, such as drills, comprises means 10, 13 on a body 1, adapted to set a tool 17 in a position whereby one cutting edge is correctly exposed, means 15 on the body to secure the tool in that position, and means 4 adapted to cause oscillatory movement of the tool in a generally longitudinal plane as the device is moved across an abrasive surface. The body 1 is shaped so as to be conveniently held by hand and, at its front, has wheels 3 which form abutment means for engagement with the abrasive surface, and, at its rear, has eccentric wheels 4 which, during movement of the device over the abrasive surface, impart the oscillatory movement to the device. A recess 6 in the body receives a projection 7 of a V-shaped support 8 for the tool 17. The support has an adjustable stop 10 at its upper end and its lower end has a tool setting means 13 which is U-shaped and embraces a projection on the support. The inner arm of the setting means 13 has a flat face for engagement with the tool, the flat face being aligned with the bottoms of the wheels 3. In use, the tool 17 is positioned to engage the setting means with its cutting edge aligned with the bottoms of the wheels. The drill is secured in position in the support by a clamping plate 15 actuated by a screw, and the stop 10 is adjusted along a slot in the support to engage the rear end of the tool. Thereafter the clamping plate is released, a shim 18 swung between the stop and the end of the drill to effect advance of the drill beyond the bottoms of the wheels 3 and the drill is reclamped so that as the device is moved over the abrasive surface the end of the tool is abraded until the wheels 3 again engage the abrasive surface. During movement of the device, the wheels 4 effect oscillation of the body and hence the drill. The drill is then turned through 180 degrees for grinding of the other cutting edge. In an alternative arrangement the tool itself is oscillated on the body.
