Abstract
1422056 Polyurethane foams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 May 1974 [29 May 1973] 25368/73 Heading C3R A flexible polyurethane foam is prepared by reacting in the presence of a blowing agent, a polyether having at least 2 hydroxyl end groups and a diphenylmethane diisocyanate composition which has an average isocyanate functionality of less than 2À4 contains not more than 60% wt. of 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and wherein at least 15% wt. of the content of diphenylmethane diisocyanate isomers consists of 2,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethane diisocyanate. The diphenylmethane composition may consist wholly of the 2,4<SP>1</SP>-isomer, or it may be a retined composition containing 40-80% wt. of the 2,41-isomer, the remainder being substantially the 4, 4<SP>1</SP>-isomer, or it may be a crude composition prepared by phosgenation of crude mixtures of polyamine obtained by the catalytic condensation of aniline and formaldehyde. Suitable polyethers are polyoxyalkylene polyols of M.Wt. 2000-10,000 preferably containing both ethylene oxide and 1,2-propylene oxide units in random or block polymer chains. Preferred polyols is a mixture of a diol and triol based on a diethylene glycol/glycerol initiator containing blocks of oxypropylene units terminated with oxyethylene units and having a M.Wt. of 3000- 6500 with from 50-80% of the OH groups being primary. Suitable foaming agents includes water alone or together with a halogenated hydrocarbon. Optional ingredients include catalysts particularly a mixture of a tertiary amine and a tin compound; chain extenders, e.g. glycerol, trimethylol propane and triethanolamine and other conventional additives. In the examples foams are prepared from a polyoxyalkylene polyol (diol/triol mixture based on diethylene glycol/glycerol plus propylene oxide) tipped with ethylene oxide, having 80% primary OH groups, and M.Wt. of 4850; water alone and together with trichlorofluoromethane; bis - (3 - dimethylaminopropyl) urea and stannous octoate as catalysts; and diisocyanato diphenyl methane containing 40% 2,41-isomer and 60% 4,4<SP>1</SP>-isomer alone or together with a crude diphenylmethane diisocyanate composition of functionality 2À6. Other similar examples are described with varying percentages of the 2,4<SP>1</SP>- and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-isomers.
