Abstract

1421166 Tunnels &c HEAD WRIGHTSON & CO Ltd 6 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 10738/72 Heading B1F Adjacent rings of tunnel-lining segments are sealed by means of sealing strips 2 received in grooves 3 in circumferential flanges 7 of the segments, the depth of each strip, is less than the depth of its respective groove, and after bolting adjacent lining rings together a pressurised fluid is injected through a bore 10 in one of the flanges into its respective groove to displace the strip therein into sealing contact with the strip in the opposite groove. The fluid is preferably a sealing medium and to facilitate the flow of the sealing medium the sealing strips, which are preferably channelshaped may be provided with protrusions (11), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the outer surface of its walls, and serrations (12) on the edge of these walls. The sealing strips are of rubber or synthetic plastics, and the sealing medium is an epoxy resin or synthetic rubber compound.
