Abstract
1418569 Inertia switches ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 21 Aug 1973 [23 Aug 1972] 39608/73 Heading H1N An inertia switch comprises a chamber 70 formed by top 5 and side walls 2 and a base 4 having a hole 7 therein, a movable mass 3 contained within the chamber and larger in cross-sectional area than the hole 7 so as to be removably positioned in the hole under rest conditions, said chamber having inclined means 14 for returning the mass to the rest position in the hole, switch means underlying the hole and mounted on the base for engaging a portion of the mass 3 extending through the hole 7 when said mass is positioned in the hole, said switch means including a biased wire electrical contact 5a movable as a result of engagement with the mass 3 in a direction against its bias to implement operation of said switch means. As shown the wire 5a normally contacts a transverse wire 10 to complete a circuit, but when mass 3 is displaced by impact, for example, the wire 5a rises and the circuit is broken. The wire 5a is accommodated in a groove 6 provided diametrically across base 4. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the ball 3 is conductive and its engagement with wire 5a constitutes the switch contacts.
