Abstract

1412758 Discs for disc brakes; cooling; mounting discs on hubs GIRLING Ltd 24 April 1973 [21 April 1972] 18758/72 Headings F2E and F2U A railway vehicle disc brake and hub assembly comprises a hub 1 mounted for rotation with an axle, and a brake disc 3 having an inner peripheral mounting flange 6 which is clamped against a radial face of the hub 1 by a clamping member 5 with the assistance of terminable fasteners such as bolts 7 which pass with clearance through holes in the disc flange 6 to allow for thermal expansion of the disc 1 in use. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 the hub 1 is formed of two halves 1A, 1B connected together by bolts 2 and is secured to the axle by a key 10. The disc 3 is also formed of two halves 3A, 3B secured together by bolts 4 passing through heavy section flanges 11, preferably with bushes 12. The disc 3 has two walls presenting braking surfaces 8, 9, the walls being interconnected by webs 3C defining air cooling passages. In the first embodiment the hub 1, disc 3 and clamping member 5 are located radially by the axle but in the embodiment of Figs. 3-5 the disc flange 6 and clamping member 5 are located over the hub 1 which has an outwardly projecting flange 14. In this embodiment the two halves 3A, 3B of the disc 3 are secured by bridge pieces 12<SP>1</SP> and bolts 4. In the modification of Fig. 6 (not shown) the hub 1 has an outwardly projecting axial spigot (15) which locates the member 5 and flange 6 which is now clamped against the outer radial face of the hub flange (14). In the modification of Fig. 7 (not shown) the bolts (4) securing the disc halves together are angled to the joint plane and only one adjacent cooling web is shortened to permit access. Fig. 8 illustrates an eccentric location of bolts 7 relative to the clearance holes in disc flange 6. The clamping member as shown in the embodiments is annular but it could also be formed as an annulus with an irregular outer periphery having radial lugs or fingers, one for securing each bolt 7.
