Abstract

1408307 Degradable copolymer for packaging materials MITSUI TOATSU CHEMICALS Inc 28 Sept 1972 [29 Sept 1971 14 Jan 1972] 44862/72 Heading C3P A copolymer suitable for use in packaging materials comprises (A) a vinyl (or substituted vinyl) aromatic monomer, (B) 0À5 to 6% by wt. of a conjugated diene, and optionally (C) a third monomer replacing up to 20% by weight of monomer (A), and is prepared by first copolymerizing monomer (A) with part of the required amount of monomer (B) and then adding the remainder of monomer (B). The copolymer is stated to be photodegradable by sunlight but not under normal storage conditions. In the examples the reaction is carried out as a bead polymerization catalysed by a mixture of benzoyl and dicumyl peroxides and a copolymer of styrene with butadiene is prepared. The products may be compounded with other polymers, such as known high-impact polystyrenes (e.g. a 93 : 7 styrene-butadiene copolymer). The polymerization may be effected in the presence or absence of a conjugated diene based rubber or a saturated chain hydrocarbon rubber.
