Abstract

1399856 Multifocal glass lenses CARL ZIESS-STIFTUNG (trading as CARL ZEISS] 16 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 42936/74 Heading C1M [Also in Division G2] Photochromic-multifocal glass lenses are produced by fusing a reading glass segment 3 to a photochromic major glass lens 1, the major lens being heated rapidly to a range of turbidity between 650‹ and 900‹ C., the reading segment being heated to a temperature below the range of turbidity, preferably below the range of heat treatment, 550‹ to 650‹ C., at which the photochromic properties of the glass are developed, the heating then being stopped, the reading segment 3 being pressed, as by a ram 2, into the hot major lens 1 to fuse them together and cooling the fused parts such that the time of the fused parts in the ranges of turbidity and heat treatment is less than the time sufficient to produce turbidity in the glass, a period of less than 10 hours, preferably 3 hours. The reading segment may be of non-photochromic glass. The major lens 1 is shaped by the convex ram 2 to a concave surface. Alternatively a concave ram may be used.
