Abstract

1399811 Assembling upholstery springs MULTILASTIC Ltd 15 Jan 1973 [21 Oct 1971] 48910/71 Heading A4M Apparatus for inter-connecting rows of springs by helical wires 3, 12 includes a tapered stop 2 on to or into which the leading end portion of the advancing helical wire passes to halt its advance at a predetermined position. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the stop 2 is provided at the end of a fixed rod 1. A sleeve 7, with helical fins 5 mating with a fixed component 6, is rotatable on the rod 1. When the helical wire has been brought to rest by the stop 2 the sleeve 7 is driven to rotate and advance along the rod 1 so that a lug 8 engages the end of the helical wire and rotates it whereby it is moved in the opposite direction from its direction of advance to a position clear of the stop 2. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the end portion of the helical wire is cut off and remains on the stop. In this case the rod 1 forms the piston of a piston and cylinder assembly 9 and is retractable so that the severed end portion is pushed off the stop 2 by a fixed abutment plate 11.
