Abstract

1398036 Air sifter POLYSIUS AG 22 May 1973 [21 July 1972] 24310/73 Headings B2H and B2P A vertically disposed circulatory air sifter comprises a central sifting chamber 1, for separation of coarse from fine material by sifting air, substantially separated by a cylindrical wall 2 of an inner housing from an annular outer chamber 5, for separation of fine material from sifting air circulating therethrough, which is itself surrounded by a cylindrical wall 6 of an outer housing; a circulatory fan 14 disposed above the chamber 1 on central vertical drive shaft 10 and effective to draw air upwardly through the chamber 1 and into the chamber 5 where the air flows downwardly before re-entering the chamber 1; an air outlet connection 20 in the lower part of the sifter; and one or more cooling air feed connections 16, 16' arranged to direct the incoming cooling air tangentially into the chamber 5 so that the direction of flow of the incoming cooling air is generally the same as the direction of the flow of the air circulating through the annular chamber 5. The mixture of coarse and fine materials to be sifted is fed through a supply pipe 12 on to a spreader plate 9 which is mounted on the shaft 10 and which flings the mixture across the chamber 1 where air, circulated by fan 14 (arrow 21) and entering the chamber through guide vanes 3 entrains the fine material towards the fan. The latter imparts a helical downward rotation to the airfine material mixture through the chamber 5, this rotation being reinforced by cooling air for the fine material supplied via the pipes 16, 16'. The fine material is thereby separated from the air and is removed at 8'. A fraction of the air is extracted via a downwardly open annular chamber 19 and the pipe 20. The coarse material falls by gravity towards an outlet 4'. The pipes 16, 16' may be replaced by a shutter louvre at the periphery of the cylindrical wall of the outer chamber 5.
