Abstract
1392618 Abrasive material NORTON CO 23 May 1972 [3 June 1971] 24127/72 Heading C4V An abrasive material consists of grits comprising a eutectic alumina-zirconia mixture wherein the alumina-zirconia eutectic is in colonies, the colonies including zirconia in microcrystalline, oriented rod form in which the average maximum diameter of the rods is not greater than 200 Angstroms and the minimum diameter is 100 Angstroms, the zirconia content of the abrasive material being from 35-50% by weight. The materials may be obtained by fusing a mixture of alumina and zirconia containing from 35-50% zirconia by weight and cooling the mixture, the cooling being sufficiently rapid to obtain the above material. The eutectic colonies may have at the boundaries thereof impurities of metals, metal oxides and metal carbides and mixtures thereof and the maximum diameter may be not greater than 100 Angstroms. 25% of the weight of the zirconia may be in a tetragonal crystal form. The material may be used to obtain grinding wheels or may be bonded to flexible backing materials. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,323,282 and 1,358,620.
