Abstract
1391438 Medicines comprising hydrophilic polymer carriers CONTACT LENS (MFG) Ltd 24 Feb 1972 [20 April 1971] 10186/71 Heading A5B [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] Hydrophilic copolymers useful as a pharmaceutical carrier comprise (i) units derived from a hydrophilic olefinically unsaturated monomer containing a heterocyclic group in an amount of 50-100% by weight of the total hydrophilic units in the copolymer, (ii) units derived from an olefinically unsaturated hydrophobic monomer present in an amount of up to 90% by weight of the total copolymer units and (iii) a minor amount of units derived from one or more cross linking monomers have at least two olefinic bonds and at least some of such units being derived from an alkylene glycol dimethacrylate, divinylbenzene, diethylene glycol bis (allyl carbonate) or allyl methacrylate. Units (i) may be derived from a monomer such as N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone or 4-vinyl pyridine. The copolymer may optionally include units of another hydrophilic monomer such as a hydroxy alkyl methacrylate. Units (ii) may be derived from an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate. The copolymers may be used as carriers for such substances as anti biotics, bactericides, fungicides, steroids, hormone preparations and other drugs, e.g. cetamide, tropicamide, idoxuridine or sulphacetamide sodium. The carrier may take the form of an article such as a non- optical corneal protective fitting or membrane, whereby the antibiotic, drug &c contained therein can be released into the eye.
