Abstract

1387842 Ballast circuits for discharge lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTIRES Ltd 14 Feb 1973 [16 Feb 1972] 7257/72 Heading H2H A ballast circuit for a metal halide discharge lamp 75 comprises input terminals 60 for connection to an A.C. source, output terminals for supplying D.C. to the lamp, a bridge rectifier 64 and a series circuit including a capacitor 82 and a resistor 90, the series circuit presenting a sufficiently high capacitance to be effective during starting of the lamp and having a sufficiently high impedance to be ineffective during normal running of the lamp. The circuit acts as a voltage doubler to enable starting of the lamp. Modifications of the circuit are described and enable voltages of three times the supply voltage to be applied to the lamp during starting.
