Abstract

1378123 Petroleum coke CONTINENTAL OIL CO 16 March 1973 [12 June 1972] 12792/73 Heading C5E Premium grade petroleum coke is made by (a) feeding reduced virgin crude oil to a coker fractionator 1, (b) feeding thermal tar from a thermal cracker fractionator 13 to the coker fractionator 1, (c) withdrawing at least a portion of the mixture formed in the bottom of fractionator 1 and passing to a coker furnace 5, (d) heating this mixture therein and passing to delayed coking drums 7 from which premium coke product is recovered, (e) withdrawing coker gas oil from drums 7 and passing it to the fractionator 1 to produce a gas oil fraction, (f) passing this fraction to the fractionator 13, withdrawing a gas oil fraction therefrom and passing this to a thermal cracking furnace and returning the product therefrom to the fractionator 13. The coker gas oil fraction from step (e) may be fractionated in fractionator 1 to a heavy gas oil fraction and a light gas oil fraction, each of which is passed separately to the fractionator 13, the corresponding gas oil products therefrom being passed separately to light oil and heavy oil cracking furnaces 17 and 19 respectively. Ethylene pyrolysis tar may be added to the reduced virgin crude feed.
