Abstract

1377677 Diphenyl ethers MOBIL OIL CORP 23 Sept 1972 44107/72 Heading C2C Novel compounds of Formula I (in which X is halogen, n is 1 to 5 and R is C 1-4 alkyl CF 3 , CN, SO 3 H, SO 2 CH 3 , CHO, halogen, SCH 3 or SO 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 ) are prepared by reacting the alkali metal salt of a halophenol with a 3-substituted-4-nitro-chloro (or bromo) benzene. 3 - Methyl - 4 - nitrochlorobenzene is prepared by nitration of m-chlorotoluene. Herbicidal compositions comprise a compound I together with a carrier therefor.
