Abstract

1364054 Wells and &c WILLIAM F REES Ltd and REES INSTRUMENTS Ltd 11 May 1972 [11 May 1971] 14214/71 Heading E1F A device for centring an instrument (such as a television camera 17) in a tubular enclosure (such as a well) comprises a body 1 for holding the instrument, two sets of pivotal locating arms 4, 7, and remotely controlled means for causing equi-angular pivotal movement of the arms of each set between an inoperative position substantially parallel with the body to an operative position in which they extend outwardly at an angle to the body to contact the wall of the enclosure. The device is lowered through a plastics tube into the well on a cable 20 connected to the camera and a tube 39 connected to the rod 261 of a piston 26 over which slides a cylinder 8 urged by a spring 41 to the position shown. The arms 4 are pivoted to the body, the arms 7 are pivoted to the cylinder, and the arms are connected by links 5, 10 so that fluid supplied by the tube 39 moves the cylinder against the spring and engages wheels 12 on the arms with the wall of the well to centre the camera. In a modification (Figs. 7, 7a not shown) the extended arms are all inclined towards the camera so that should the arms fail to retract it might be possible to force the arms to retract by pulling the device through the mouth of the plastics tube through which it must pass to reach the surface. The piston and cylinder may be replaced by a screw and nut, or by coaxial cables.
