Abstract
1354716 Separating C 8 aromatics UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 1 Oct 1971 45732/71 Heading C5E A process for separating a mixture of xylene isomers and ethylbenzene comprises (a) contacting the mixture with a crystalline aluminosilicate adsorbent in a first adsorption zone thereby selectively retaining either o-xylene and mxylene or p-xylene and ethylbenzene in the adsorbent; (b) separately recovering non-retained material and retained material; (c) passing at least part of the m/o xylene stream from (b) to an isomerization zone to produce p-xylene and/or ethylbenzene; (d) recovering o-xylene from the isomerization zone effluent; (e) recycling at least part of the remaining isomerization zone effluent to (a); (f) contacting at least part of the pzylene/ethylbenzene stream from (b) with a crystalline aluminosilicate adsorbent in a second adsorption zone and thereby selectively retaining either p-xylene or ethylbenzene; and (g) recovering from (f) enriched p-xylene and ethylbenzene streams. The adsorbent in each zone may be a type X or Y zeolite containing one or two cations selected from Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd and Mn. The isomerization catalyst may comprise Pd and Cl on an Al 2 O 3 base which contains 3-5% mordenite.
