Abstract

1352275 Measuring torque electrically SIMMONDS PRECISION PRODUCTS Inc 18 Feb 1972 [29 April 1971] 7522/72 Heading G1N Apparatus for measuring torsion on shaft 10 comprises circumferential bands 14, 15 of magnetic recording tape extending along a circumferential path around the shaft at each of two points 11, 12 spaced apart longitudinally of the shaft, adjacent which bands are transducers 16, 17 having magnetic heads for recording or reproducing signals on the band, the phase difference between the reproduced signals being detected in a phase comparator 18 connected to the transducers which comprises a calibrated phase shifter 21 and a phase-responsive null instrument 24. The magnetic recording tape is fixed to the shaft by an adhesive. The signals recorded on the medium may be sinusoidal, pulse or sawtooth signals and the output signal from the null instrument may be utilized to control the shaft torsion. If there is a phase difference between the signals recorded on the bands with no torsion on the shaft it may be compensated for in the Fig.3 embodiment by setting phase shifter 21 to zero and adjusting phase shifter 31 to give a null on instrument 24.
