Abstract
1351917 Bending wire or strip E V G ENTWICKLUNGS-U VERWERTUNGS GmbH 9 Nov 1972 [12 April 1972] 51811/72 Heading B3E A wire or strip bending machine comprises means for intermittently advancing the stock and an intermittently driven tool for bending the stock around a stationary anvil after each advance, the tool being retractable from a working position on one side of the path of the stock, movable to the other side of the path without intersecting the path, and advanceable to a working position on the other side of the path, so that bending may take place in either of two opposite directions. Figs. 4 and 5 show an embodiment in which a sweep-arm tool 20 is mounted on a sleeve 41 rotatable and axially movable in a fixed bearing 48. A compression spring 45 extends between a collar 46 fixed on sleeve 41 and a collar 47 slidable on the sleeve 41 and normally abutting bearing 48. The tool and sleeve are rotatable by a pinion 40 fixed to the sleeve and driven by gear 39 reciprocable by hydraulic piston 80 and cylinder 81. A stop bar 85 on gear 39 co-operates with adjustable stops 84, 84a. The rod 42 of an hydraulic piston 43 and cylinder 44 is arranged to pull sleeve 41 to the right (arrow a) or to push an ejector 51 to the left (arrow b), when displaced from a neutral position by a three-way selector switch (not shown), comprising spring 45 in either case. A pin 49 working in slots 50 in sleeve 41 connects collar 47 to ejector 51. By this means, in one configuration, extension of rod 82 causes the working stroke of tool 20, and retraction of the rod causes the return stroke of the tool. If rod 42 is retracted, withdrawing tool 20 to the chain-dot line position, cylinder 81 changed over, and then rod 42 allowed to be returned to the neutral position by spring 45, tool 20 is then located on the opposite side of the wire or strip, and retraction of rod 82 causes the working stroke of the tool, and extension causes the return stroke. In this embodiment, a fixed anvil is needed on each side of the path of the stock, see Fig. 6 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the bending tool 20 is supported on an arm 103 extending from a single anvil 19 mounted on the shaft 102 of a pinion 101 meshing with rack 100. The pinion is movable by a rod 104. By this means, when the anvil and tool are retracted, the anvil may be displaced from one side of the path B to the other by rod 104, and tool 20 may be displaced from the other side to the one side by relative movement of the pinion and rack. In a further embodiment, gear 39 in Fig. 5 is driven by the variable stroke linkage described in Specification 1,351,539, which then contains a rod adjustable to ensure that the tool is equally displaced either side of the path during a complete cycle, so that whichever stroke is the working stroke, a bend of the required angle is obtained.
