Abstract

1348937 Purifying coke oven gas CARL STILL 18 Nov 1971 [18 Nov 1970] 53662/71 Heading C5E Coke oven gas 1 is contacted with ammonia in a washer 2 to provide a hydrogen sulphide-free gas 7 which is treated at 15 with a material 16 which removes ammonia therefrom by the formation of ammonium salts; the stream 18 containing the ammonium salts is heated at 34 to dissociate the salts to provide a recycle stream 38 of ammonia. The material 16 suitable contains aqueous sulphuric acid, ammonium bisulphate or mono-ammonium phosphate. In the washer 2 the gas 1 is treated with an aqueous stream 3 from the coke oven plant and to which the aqueous portion 4 of the recycle stream 38 is added, the gaseous portion 6 of the recycle stream 38 and an aqueous stream 5. The aqueous effluent 8 from the washer 2 containing ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide is heated and passed to a de-acidifier column 21 from which NH 3 , H 2 S and CO 2 are removed from line 22 and the aqueous bottoms 23 is separated into a recycle stream 5 containing some ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide and a stream 24. The stream 24 is passed to an ammonia still 25 which provides an aqueous stream 26 for discharge and a stream 29 of ammonia vapour which as shown is recycled to the column 21 but alternatively can be separately recovered.
