Abstract
1348927 Mixing metal melts DEMAG AG 14 June 1971 [15 June 1970] 27672/71 Heading B1C [Also in Division C7] In a method and apparatus for agitating and metal melts (especially in the de-sulphurizing of pig iron) the melt is stirred to produce eddies simultaneously along a flow path. As shown the melt flows by gravity along a trough into which depend a plurality of agitators 5 arranged along the flow path and driven by a motor 8 through gears 3 and clutches 7. The agitators are mounted in a housing 1 which is transportable by crane and carries also a heat shield 14. Soda, lime or other treatment agent is supplied from a device 19 to form a slag 21; flow of the melt is regulated by a sluice gate 27. Agitators may be selectively driven or independently driven at different speeds and may be of different lengths; preferably they act in the slag/melt interface. Adjacent agitators are preferably contro-rotating, see Fig. 2 (not shown). Two such flow paths may be fed from a blast or melt furnace (16, Fig. 4, not shown). The furnace slag is separated and discharged at 17 before treatment, and treatment slag at 24.
