1345849 Indoaniline dyes L'OREAL 9 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 21541/72 Heading C4P The invention comprises indoaniline dyes of the general formula wherein Z is amino, acylamino or hydroxyl, each of R 5 , R 6 and R; are H or alkyl or alkoxy containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R 8 and R 9 are H or alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, optionally substituted by a hydroxyl, carbamoyl, acylamino or piperidinyl group, or H 8 and R 5 or R 9 and H 6 together may complete a dihydrooxazine or pyrroline ring with the proviso that at least two of the radicals H 5 -H 9 are other than hydrogen if Z is -NH 2 , salts of these compounds with inorganic and organic acids, zinc chloride double salts and tautomers thereof. They are prepared by condensing a compound of the general formula wherein R 5 -R 9 and Z are as above, or a salt thereof with (a) p-amino-phenol or a salt thereof in an aqueous, aqueous-alcoholic or aqueous acetone medium at -5‹- + 40‹ C. in presence of an oxidizing agent, (b) benzoquinone-N- chloroimide in aqueous, aqueous-alcoholic or aqueous-acetone at 0-40‹ C., optionally converting the indoaniline formed into a salt or (c) with p-nitrosophenol in an alcoholic medium in presence of zinc chloride at reflux temperature to form the zinc chloride double salt. The dyes are used optionally in admixture with azo, anthraquinone, nitrobenzene, azine, oxazine, indophenol, indamine or indoaniline dyes to dye keratinic fibres, e.g. human hair, the compositions optionally being in the form of a wavesetting lotion by addition of a resin.
