Abstract

1344262 Matrix displays RANK ORGANI. ZATION Ltd 26 May 1971 [1 June 1970] 26342/70 Heading G5C A display panel comprises a matrix of optical cells 5, 6 and a plurality of bundles 7, 8 of fibre optics 11, 13, the ends of each bundle being grouped together, the other ends being connected to selected elements to form a sign, each cell providing a slightly divergent beam of light when an appropriate group of ends is illuminated. The cells are arranged behind a glass or plastics material diffusing screen 2 and the ends are illuminated by tungsten halogen bulbs 3, 4 with dichroic reflectors 3A, 4A. Each cell comprises a clad fibre optic 9 (Fig. 2, not shown) with one end at the focus of a collimating lens, the other end butting against one or more fibre optics. The colour may be varied by placing a filter in front of any bulb. The panel is used as a motorway display and a fault can be detected since no current flows when a bulb fails.
