Abstract
1339461 Cellular plastics made by ultrasonic vibration STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 23 Sept 1971 44388/71 Heading C3C [Also in Divisions B4-B5 and H1] An electrical conductor wire 1 is sheathed with cellular plastics insulation by passage through an extrusion die 4 from which the molten plastics is delivered as the conductor is ultrasonically vibrated to produce cavitation of the plastics which is prevented from collapse by cooling of the plastics. The conductor 1 passes through the die 4 between vibration dampers 7, 8 e.g. each consisting of a pair of diametrically opposed and spring loaded pulleys, and the vibrations are preferably applied between the upstream damper 7 and the die 4 by a device 9 e.g. a radio frequency generator 10, transducer 11, and velocity transformer 12. The frequency and intensity of the vibration may be varied to produce the cavitation within, or downstream of the die 4, and the cavitation may extend throughout the cross-section of the applied insulation or be restricted to the immediate vicinity of the conductor. The insulation may comprise polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride; or polystyrene.
