Abstract

1334253 Stamping BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP 7 Sept 1970 [5 Sept 1969] 42701/70 Headings B3A and B3Q In the deep drawing of seamless metal articles, sheet steel is used which has a metallic coating on both sides, the coating on one side having a thickness to provide a lubricity no greater than that of the substrate and the coating on the other side being such that it provides a lubricity greater than that of the substrate, whereby when the coated steel is passed through an ironing die with the coating on said one side adjacent the punch and the coating on said other side adjacent the die which makes a semi-cone angle with the punch in the range greater than 2 degrees and up to 8 degrees, the shear stress will counteract the longitudinal tension so that reduction in excess of 50% can be achieved, while longitudinal tension is held below the fracture limit. As shown, Fig. 1, the wall thickness H B of a shallow drawn blank is reduced to H A in one pass through an ironing die 11 by a punch 10. Suitable metallic coatings for said other side include brass, tin, zinc and copper and the lower lubricity of the coating for said one side may be achieved by using a different metal, e.g. chrome-chromium oxide, or a lesser thickness of the same metal e.g. a tin coating of weight up to 0À051 lb/b.b. on said one side and 0À25-0À50 lb/b.b. on said other side. The preferred die angle relative to the punch is between 4 and 6 degrees.
