Abstract

1332877 Valves FOLLETT VALVES Inc 28 Feb 1972 9022/72 Heading F2V A valve controlling flow from a liquefied gas tank has a safety element 80 which, in response to excess flow via ports 66 and grooves 83 to outlet 24, shifts into engagement with seat ring 87 and is only unseated when a main screwdown closure member 35 in approaching its seat 32 abuts rod 94 which then opens a Schrader (Registered Trade Mark) type valve 104 in element 80 to establish a by-pass flow across the latter, causing it to disengage ring 87 under the influence of gravity or of a light return spring. Rod 94 is guided in sleeve 90 which abuts a sleeve 91 in a plane of weakness of the valve body defined by groove 58 which predisposes the body to fracture at that point under severe impact. During filling of the gas tank, element 80 is depressed against spring 76 to uncover ports 66 in sleeve 64 which is swaged to the valve body at 63. The main closure member 35 is carried by a sealing diaphragm 38, and may alternatively include a sealing ring 136 concentric with a washer 135, the ring and washer co-operating with concentric seats and being retained by lock-ring 140 having its end 146 received in groove 145. The arrangement may be such that the by-pass valve is opened after ring 136 contacts its seat but before final engagement of washer 135 with its seat. In a modified valve, element 80 is replaced by a ball and the by-pass valve is mounted in a separate body passage terminating within the innermost seat of the main closure member, the by-pass valve being opened by rods abutting in the plane of weakness of the body.
