Abstract
1329217 Pipe couplings HEPWORTH PLASTICS Ltd 21 June 1972 28969/72 Heading F2G A spigot and socket coupling between plastics pipes comprises a collar 3 fast on the spigot, having a recess 6 for a sealing washer 7 together with at least one groove 12 to receive a transverse flexible locking rod 13, and a plastics sleeve 9 secured around the socket end 8 and expanded with the socket end, the socket being locally expanded to provide a groove 11 for the flexible locking rod, a hole 14 through the socket wall accepting the locking rod which passes circumferentially around the spigot when the grooves 11, 12 are aligned. More than one pair of grooves 11, 12 may be provided for additional rods 13, to strengthen the coupling. Instead of the recess 6 being between two parts of the collar 3, as shown, the collar may be set back from the end of the spigot to provide a seat for the sealing ring. The flexible locking rod 13 may be cut-off flush with the hole 14. Insertion of the rod 13 may be facilitated by the use of castor oil, &c. The collar 3, which is made of plastics, may be secured on the spigot by heat or solvent cement welding, by a cement, or by roughening the mating surfaces before force or shrink fitting. The sleeve 9 may be secured on the socket by welding, cementing or by mechanical grip on expansion. The mouth 16 of the socket is bevelled to facilitate insertion of the spigot, and the ends 17, 18 of the collar and sleeve are also bevelled.
