Abstract
1328553 Arrangement for controlling a flash tube PHILIPS ELECTRONIC and ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Nov 1970 [8 Nov 1969] 52713/70 Heading G2A A control circuit for a flash tube 4, in which the flash tube is shunted by a circuit comprising a resistor 6, a switching element 7 and a capacitor 8, and wherein the duration of the flash is influenced by a control circuit of the switching element 7 which contains a photo-sensitive element 15, fed from a previously charged main capacitor 3. The capacitor 8 is included so that the main capacitor will not completely discharge after each flash. When taking a photograph, a voltage is applied between terminals 20 and 21 thereby igniting the flash tube 4 and charging a capacitor 14 via primary 5 and secondary 12 windings of a transformer. Light received by the photo-sensitive element 15 after being reflected off the object being photographed decreases its resistance causing a current to flow to a capacitor 18 which triggers switching element 7 when the voltage of the capacitor 18 is high enough. This allows current from the main capacitor 3 to flow through the shunt circuit 6, 7, 8 until the voltage on capacitors 3 and 8 has become substantially equal. Both capacitors 3 and 8 then discharge through flash tube 4, the current from the capacitor 8 going by way of diode 10. When the charge of the two capacitors 3 and 8 has decreased to the minimum operating voltage of the tube 4, the tube 4 is extinguished leaving a residual charge in the main capacitor 3. The controlled switching element can be a quench tube or a thyristor.
