Abstract
1325715 Ethylene oxide ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 7 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 57947/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] Ethylene oxide is obtained by the oxidation of ethylene with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a bimetallic catalyst consisting of a major proportion (by weight) of silver and a minor proportion of one metal from Groups IB, IIIB at the iron sub group of Group VIII of the Periodic Table (Fisher Scientific Co 1953) and which is prepared by contacting a high surface area derivative of silver with an aqueous solution of a soluble salt of the second metal, drying the impregnated silver derivative, reducing it, and some barium peroxide may be added to the initial silver derivative to prevent wasting the reduced material. Some barium peroxide may be added to the initial silver derivative to prevent long-term deactivation of the catalyst. Examples describe the preparation of ethylene oxide using Ag/Au, Ag/Re, Ag/Cu, Ag/Mn, Ag/Fe and Ag/Ru catalysts.
