Abstract

1325291 Casting composite articles; composite tape; bearing inserts BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 30 Dec 1971 [6 Jan 1971 11 June 1971] 677/71 and 27525/71 Headings B3A and B3F [Also in Divisions C7 and F2] In a method of forming a composite material comprising carbon fibres embedded in a metallic matrix, the carbon fibres are provided with a coating of a metal carbide prior to their being embedded in said matrix. The preferred carbides are those of Ti, V, Hf, Ta, Zr, Nb, Mo and Cr, and suitable matrix metals are Cu or an alloy thereof, Al, Mg and Sn-Pb alloys. A small amount of one of the carbide forming metals may be added to the matrix metal. In an example carbon fibres are provided with a coating of titanium carbide by passing them through a furnace containing titanium and iodine at a temperature of 950‹ C. The coated fibres are then placed in a silica mould and a tin-lead alloy containing 0À5% Ti introduced while the mould is being vibrated. The product may be used to form a plain bearing or it may be formed as a tape.
